An in-kind donation receipt confirms a transfer of a non-monetary donation from donor to organization. Also called a contemporaneous written acknowledgment, it ensures that the value of donated goods can be claimed by donors as a deduction. An organization is not legally required to acknowledge a contribution.

How to Write

An in-kind donation receipt should contain the following info:

  • Donor and receipt details – The name and address of the donor, the receipt and donation date, and the receipt number.
  • Charity information – The name of the organization, their address, and their federal tax ID number.
  • Donated goods/services – A description of the goods/services donated (but not their value).*
  • Exchanged goods – If goods/services were given in exchange for the donation, a description of the goods/services and an estimation of their value.
  • Acknowledgment – A statement that acknowledges the donation has been received.
  • Signature (optional) – The signature and name of a representative as well as the date of signing.

 

*It is not the responsibility of the charity/organization to estimate the fair market value of an in-kind donation for the donor.[1]
