A clothing donation receipt is a document provided by a charity to an individual to acknowledge a clothing donation. It will list the date of donation, the location, a list of the items provided (often by number of bags), and language stating that no goods or services were provided and that the charity will not estimate the value of a donation.
Charities are not able to provide individuals with receipts for the estimated value of used clothing; it’s the donor’s responsibility to approximate and document the dollar value of each article.
Goodwill and the Salvation Army both provide a guide for estimating the fair market value of articles of clothing and household items. Prices range from $2-3 for used t-shirts to over $60 for an overcoat in very good condition.
Used clothing must be in good condition or better to be used towards a tax deduction.[1]
The only exception is if the item is valuable, and the individual is claiming more than $500 for it. In this case, it must be appraised by a qualified appraiser and Form 8283 must be filled out.[2]
