A cash donation receipt is a written acknowledgement of a monetary donation to an organization. It should only be used when actual money is donated, not other non-cash (in-kind) gifts. It must include the organization’s legal name, their federal tax ID, the amount donated, whether goods or services were provided in return, and the signature of a representative.

A cash donation receipt is provided when money is donated (as opposed to goods, services, or property) be it in the form of cash, a check, money order, or other method. Tax payers are required to obtain written proof of donation (a “contemporaneous written acknowledgment”) for any single contribution over $250 if they plan on deducting the donation from their taxes.
If goods and services were provided in exchange for the donation, a written statement must be included that estimates the value of the goods and services.
