Why use a Cash Receipt?

  • Tax reporting – A receipt proves that money changed hands, enabling the seller to report the income and the buyer to potentially write off the expense.
  • Paper trail – Cash transactions don’t have a paper trail; supplying a receipt ensures the exchange doesn’t slip through the cracks.
  • Internal record keeping – A completed receipt can be kept in a company’s or individual’s records for future budgeting, expense planning, or internal audits.
  • Proof of ownership – The buyer can use the receipt to prove they purchased a product, which may be necessary for warranties or returns.
  • Legitimacy – Providing a buyer with a receipt demonstrates professionalism and transparency on the seller’s part.
  • Petty cash – Even when small amounts of money are spent, collecting a receipt following a cash sale enables companies to keep track of their petty cash reserve.
