What is a Change Order in a Contract?

A change order in a contract is a document submitted by either party that reflects one of the following:

  1. An addition in time and/or money to the previously agreed upon scope.
  2. A subtraction in time and/or money from the previously agreed-upon scope.
  3. A substitution resulting in zero change in cost or time (e.g., access, design).

Once signed by both parties, it reflects the new terms of the arrangment.
