How to Estimate Siding Material

When determining the cost of materials and labor of a siding job, contractors will:

• Measure height – Find a corner of the house and measure from where the siding starts to where the roof and corner meet.
• Measure width – Measure every side of the house below the roof line to obtain area of each wall.
• Measure extra areas – Measure gables (HxW÷2) and any other extra areas of the building.
• Measure windows/doors – Take the measurements of the areas of each door, window, and other surface that won’t involve siding.
• Add up surface area – Add all sides and gables and subtract the area of windows, doors, chimneys etc.
• Add 10% – Take the surface area and multiply it by 1.10 to account for waste.
